Chris Jericho debuted in WCW during the era of the cool heel, but he was neither cool nor heel. His generic blonde haired pretty faced good guy character was as over as Mojo Rawley on NXT. He needed an edge. And when he finally turned heel and gained momentum, he was far from a cool heel. He was whiny, paranoid, arrogant, cowardly, overbearing and just absolutely punchable. And he was also one of the most entertaining parts of Nitro.
Jericho stood out because he wasn’t trying to be the cool heel. To do so on the same show as the NWO would have been a fools errand. Jericho was a comedic heel, designed to make the audience laugh and boy did they ever! His legendary man of 1000 holds promo remains one of his funniest moments to this day. With Creative focusing entirely on the main event and NWO, the cruiserweights were free to develop their own characters and Jericho injected his own sense of humor into his promos. Though his character was extremely irritating, he was also hilarious and fans were hooked every time Jericho was in the ring. It’s a testament to Jericho’s charisma and comedic timing that his character became popular because as Y2J would tell you himself, he was a total jerk.
