9. Mainstream Approach

A lot of WWE’s decision to put the title on Brock Lesnar is down to their sales targets with WWE Network. The company wants to attract more casual FANS who aren’t necessarily interested in wrestling, but who are interested in celebrity and drama. Brock Lesnar brings that element. He’s well known from his UFC fighting days and the cool factor notoriety they brought him.
The reason WWE wants to attract this casual fanbase is obvious, wrestling FANS alone are a limited niche fandom. Blow it open to pop culture though and you have the entire world as a ripe market. Lesnar has that pop culture appeal, he isn’t identified as a WWE wrestler, he’s perceived as a man of his own brand. People will pay for the WWE Network not because they follow WWE, but because they want to watch Brock.
That’s why Brock is the right guy just now. As WWE aggressively target Network subscribers, Lesnar is the best wrestler to bring new FANS in. Cena fans are already on board, whereas someone like Daniel Bryan isn’t even known outside of WWE fandom. Brock as champion represents an opportunity to go after new customers.
