There are movies performed from higher, there are moves with more daredevil risk attached, but few aerial moves look prettier when executed than John Morrison’s gloriously named Starship Pain.
Morrison, now wrestling the independent circuit under his real name John Hennigan in between acting jobs, had to go through several names and gimmicks before he reached the one that would make him famous. He was Johnny Blaze for a week (until WWE realised that trademark was owned by Marvel), then Johnny Spade for another week. Johnny Nitro would be the name that stuck during his formative years in the company, and upon going solo, he’d move on to his rock star persona, John Morrison.
It was that gimmick that allowed him the flair to increase his moveset, and Starship Pain – a split-legged corkscrew moonsault onto a prone opponent, normally performed by jumping from inside the ring to use the ropes at the turnbuckle as a springboard, and usually ending in a pinning predicament – would be the standout. It’s a beautiful, beautiful move to watch executed well (Morrison wouldn’t be consistent with it on television)…
